Murray & Roberts secures an estimated R2 billion in new contracts

Murray & Roberts has secured close to R2 billion in new contracts during the month of October.

Murray & Roberts Cementation has been appointed by Northam Platinum Limited to develop and equip two sets of decline shafts at its Booysensdal North Mine, UG2 Project. The contract value is approximately R1,3 billion and the project duration is estimated at 36 months. The scope of work also includes initial stoping to ramp up production to a steady rate of about 180 000 reef tonnes per month. An estimated 15km of tunnel development and 310 000 square metres of stoping will be done during this period.

Henry Laas, Murray & Roberts group chief executive, comments "The Construction Global Underground Mining operating platform continues to perform well due to strong global demand for commodities. This business is well positioned for continued growth", continues Laas. 

Concor Mining, in joint-venture with Basil Read, has been awarded the opencast contract by Assmang Iron Ore for opencast mining of iron ore at its Beeshoek Mine, Northern Cape. The contract value is approximately R722 million and is effective 01 November 2011 with completion set for end-June 2014.
Finally, SANRAL awarded the rehabilitation of National Route 1, Section 8 between Nelspoort and Three Sisters to Concor Roads & Earthworks. The contract period is 24 months effective 01 November 2011 and the contract value is estimated at R143 million.
